Pick & Place PCB Machine

Lead Designer

I designed a "desktop" pick 'n' place PCB machine using SolidWorks. This Surface Mounted Technology (SMT) would be used for in-house printed circuit board fabrication and assembly services in an educational setting based on client requirements. Considering the constraints and service environment for the SMT, my team came up with a detailed design report that included multiple conceptual designs. Those candidates were compared to each other using different engineering techniques like multi-voting, Pugh chart and others.

A concept of the final design was proposed and a fully working CAD model of the final product was presented

The 4-axis final design utilizes vacuum pick of components, a spring loaded PCB holder, variable feeder reels - all enclosed in a box for safety purpose. The transparent lid and sides makes it easier for viewing. The design also includes a heat-dissipation system (rear) to avoid temperature build up after extensive use. Cost estimate of this machine was around $2000
